I’m in Austin, Texas this week for the IEEE meeting.  This meeting brings together all areas within IEEE, and it is one of our 3 meetings per year to conduct the business of our society.

I attended the Leadership Orientation for New Society Presidents in November 2011, just before I assumed the role as PCS President.  This year I’m back to participate in the orientation.  I was asked to speak on the subject of collaborating across societies and the importance of communication, two topics that are dear to my heart.  The other panelists were Moshe Kam and John Vig, two former presidents of IEEE.

I started my presentation  by asking the group of newly elected society presidents, division presidents, regional representatives and others if they knew there is a Professional Communication Society in IEEE.  Roughly half raised their hands, and I promised to buy each of them a drink later tonight.  It was good to know that our efforts to promote PCS within IEEE have been working.  Yes, the price I have to pay is buying drinks, but I figure there are many different ways to let people know what we do in PCS!
